Background of Black & Brown
Black & Brown Publication emerged from the hearts of its founders in 1988. In its early days, its first product was Malaysia’s first English language humour magazine. Alongside other magazines, B&B was also commissioned: a Malay language humour magazine called Telatah and another directed at children known as Kuntum. Both of these magazines were for high profile clients in the local publication scene.
By 1990, the company’s name became a misnomer when it expanded business into below-line advertising. Clients like Beechams, Caltex, Celcom, Giant and many more, however, were not concerned with the name, as they were more particular with the kind of work quality they were getting. This brought additional growth and by 1994, Black & Brown developed additional studio strength by creating a unit for Islamic design, later expanding into a major contributor to the overall strength of presence.
In 1994, the founder of Black & Brown conceived a project to develop Malaysia’s first ever fully illuminated manuscript of the Quran (R & D work started in the same year). In 1997, the Deputy Prime Minister officially launched the endeavour, thus recognising it as a national project known as Al Quran Mushaf Malaysia Project. After several million ringgit and a lot of work, the manuscript was completed in the year 2000. In the following year, mass production of the Quran went on way and by 2002 Dr Mahathir, Malaysia’s Prime Minister, launched the limited edition. Each set of three volumes, priced at 30,000 ringgit became worthy treasure.
The incorporation of Black & Brown Resources Sdn. Bhd. took place in 2004 and all activities were reorganised under a new structure. The new structure did not change the original business objectives or the owners who have always been hands-on right from the beginning in 1988.
